SPECIES GLADIOLUS
SITUATION: Corms can be planted in either a sunny or semi-shaded position. Well rotted animal manure or compost should be worked through the soil several weeks before planting, digging deeply to ensure good drainage. This species of Gladiolus flower in late spring/early summer. TIME OF PLANTING: March to May. Plant 10cm deep and space 12cm apart. WHILE GROWING: Any fungal diseases which may appear can be controlled by spraying with a suitable fungicide. Watch for thrips (minute black insects), especially around flowering time. Spray with an insecticide to control these if necessary. DIGGING & STORING: Corms can be dug 4-6 weeks after flowering. After digging, spread bulbs to dry and when dry remove any old corm, roots and cormlets. Store corms in a cool, airy position. Cormlets will flower in their second season. These Gladiolus can be left undisturbed for several seasons. When left in, a light top dressing should be added in the winter.
