BLUEBERRIES

SITUATION: Best grown in areas with cool-cold winters and should be planted in a sunny position with protection from hot summer winds. The soil must have good drainage and generous amounts of well-rotted manure or compost should be worked through before planting.

TIME OF PLANTING: During winter months when plants are dormant. Space plants 150cm apart.

PRUNING: To assist development of the plants remove flowers in the first and second year and snip off the ends of the branches. In the fourth year, cut back branches to 10-20 cm in length. These will shoot again and new shoots will also appear from the base of the plant. Any weak or low spreading branches should be removed. Pruning should always be done in early winter when plants are dormant. Fruit is borne on one year old wood. For each mature plant, keep 5 or 6 of the strongest, older stems and 2 new shoots. These newer shoots eventually replace the older stems.

GENERAL CARE: Water well throughout the growing season. Top dress with complete fertiliser (N:P:K) in early spring. Moths and caterpillars may cause damage and should be controlled by spraying with a suitable insecticide when necessary. The bushes take about seven years to mature and will produce for up to twenty years. The main harvesting time is mid December to mid January. Berries should be left to ripen on the bush before picking and are best picked about 6 days after they have turned blue. Fruit is picked by rolling berries off with the thumb and forefinger without squeezing. Fresh berries can be refrigerated for up to 2 weeks or frozen for later use.
