NERINES & SPREKELIA
SITUATION: Nerines prefer a warm, sunny position while Sprekelias are suitable for semi-shaded positions. Soil should be well drained and prepared with the usual well-rotted organic matter or complete fertiliser. TIME OF PLANTING: June to August. Plant with their necks just above the soil surface and space bulbs 15-20 cm apart. Nerines tend to flower more reliably when planted in clumps. WHILE GROWING: Both of these plants are hardy and need little attention during the growing season. A top dressing of complete fertiliser after flowering will help build up next season’s flower inside the bulbs. DIGGING AND STORING: Nerines can be left in the ground to naturalise and will produce more flowers if left undisturbed. Sprekelias can also be left undisturbed for several years. Bulbs can be lifted between May and August if needed. Store in a dry, airy position.
