LILIUMS—Asiatic, Oriental, L/A Hybrid and Regal Liliums
SITUATION: Full sun or semi-shade in a well drained soil. Oriental Liliums prefer a cool or semi-shaded position and may require staking and protection from hot winds. Dig soil deeply, working through a generous quantity of well-rotted manure before planting. TIME OF PLANTING: Late autumn or winter. Plant bulbs about three times their height below the surface. Space 20-35 cm apart. GENERAL CARE:Water well in the warmer months. Spray with an insecticide to control against thrips or aphids if necessary. Fungal diseases can be controlled by spraying with a suitable fungicide. Bulbs which have been left in the ground should be top dressed in winter with a mulch of manure or compost 2-3 cm thick. DIGGING AND STORING: Liliums are best left undisturbed for several years. Bulbs can be lifted and separated in late autumn if necessary. Replant immediately, otherwise store temporarily in a moist peat or sphagnum moss.
