CALLA LILIES
SITUATION: Suitable for sunny or lightly shaded positions. They prefer a rich, moist but free-draining soil. Prepare soil a few weeks before planting by working through some well-rotted manure or other organic matter. TIME OF PLANTING: June to August. Plant 10-12 cm deep and space 15-25 cm apart. GENERAL CARE: Water regularly when necessary but avoid waterlogging as this can rot the rhizomes. Top dress with some fertiliser during spring. The flowers are excellent for cutting. DIGGING AND STORING: Can be left undisturbed for many years. When left in ground, top dress with some well-rotted manure or other organic matter during winter. Rhizomes can be dug late autumn or winter if necessary. To divide them, cut into pieces that each have a growing eye. Allow wound to dry before replanting by storing in a dry, airy position.
